The double courtyard parti frames outdoor spaces both to the North and South of the residence. To the North, a drive court allows ample space for vehicular access while setting the main entry and massing off as a composition. Passing through the foyer, the high-ceiling living room opens West to a formal dining area and gourmet kitchen on an axis transverse to the courtyard parti. Continuing to the South, 10’ double sliding glass doors open softly to a large pool deck wrapped by the main spaces of the first floor. The long open floor plan, tall ceilings with ample glazing, and the courtyard parti all work in harmony with passive solar principles and prevailing breezes to allow for an efficient green design. Her desires for a contemporary but also contextual project led to an interesting juxtaposition of historic exterior features surrounding a contemporary open plan and minimal interior detailing. Extending the floor plan, diverse exterior spaces include decks, screened porches and balconies to take advantage of seasonal differences under the extensive tree canopy. Other features included a 10,000 gallon rainwater collection system and a 5 star AEGB rating from Austin Energy. At the scale of the aperture, the louvered shutter plays a critical role in this public | private gradation. The word louver is derived from the French ‘l’ouvert’ or the open one. Functionally, the louver provides privacy and shading while still allowing the critical airflow that was needed before the advent of air conditioning. At night, the louvered shutter takes on another more abstract role performing in a figure field reversal with the buildings they articulate. In absence of daylight, the window assembly is transformed from penetration to object. Through its louvered slats, the shutter casts light out from the historic homes into the street while also allowing an almost voyeuristic view of the street life from French Quarter homes. L’ouvert proposes an ethereal and interactive shuttered object which transforms the traditional vertical proportion of the historic French Quarter window into a horizontal element. The proposal, viable for both exterior and interior installation, consists of a large scale CNC cut EPS* volume with concealed LED tape lighting and operable light wings referencing the slats of the louvered shutter. The proposal allows users to control the light exposure throughout the space and on other visitors through manipulation of 3 vertical bays of louvers and lighting level controls. We updated the pool area coping, edge tiling and built a new outdoor kitchen grilling area but the most significant improvement was the integration of a new custom steel cabana structures. The simple powder coated unit we designed was iterated three times adjacent to the pool to provide gathering areas for residents. One has an accessible ramp, they all have lighting for night time use and create intimate areas for the residents and a selling point for the owner. Much of the complexity of the fabrication came in designing a way that it could be installed in sections that could be powder coated and disbursed to the site without vehicular access. The two were connected by a covered screen porch and the secondary spaces of the house like the pantry, laundry and powder room. From the street, in true Hyde Park style, a long porch greets the neighborhood punctuated by more modern vertical windows which penetrate the painted brick portion of the facade up into the vaulted space of the front living room as dormers. Visitors approach the front porch and are guided to a recessed cedar clad entry and vestibule before entering the main space. Once inside the space unfolds into an open floor plan arrangement with the living and dining opening to an interior screen porch and linear lap pool which runs the length of the south side of the residence. The two story portion of the residence consists of the master suite on the ground floor and above it two bedrooms and a hidden deck tucked behind the living room volume. Classic gables in white are outlined by modern black metal paneling. The primary and secondary volumes peak high over the carport canopy which continues across over the entry patio. The foyer becomes a circulation node for the rest of this expansive home. A Kitchen with European cabinetry, and open Dining and Living spaces are beyond a wood accent wall. They wrap around a screened porch which filters light and connects to the large backyard. The stair off of the foyer becomes a vertical spine to the second floor and the habitable attic above. A broad roof extends the visual perspective from the street corner deep into the urban lot where the main residence is set behind a private frontal entertainment court. Entry is compressed by a low ceiling that carries through the circulation of the home, allowing the main spaces the same expansive effect first encountered at the exterior. This is most greatly felt in the central living space peaked by a vaulted ceiling and articulated by exposed joists. The rest of the spaces pinwheel adjacent to this space with an office and powder, a formal dining set on the front corner, the kitchen on axis to the vault, access to the outdoor living area, and the private spaces all converging here. The master suite protrudes below the main roof form to provide a counter balance and to separate the vehicular access and utility areas from the outdoor entertainment space. To the opposite side the canopy extends just over the edge of the pool, linking them spatially and visually. The wood soffits provide visual warmth and comfort; a contrast to the cool Lueder’s Limestone masonry below. The limestone forms create a mood of enclosure, organizing the space into sitting, cooking and eating. To the East, one can breakfast by limestone framed sunrises just beyond the live oaks. The oxidized steel panels in the fireplace and behind the grill not only provide a visual and practical contrast but formalize space creating focal points to either side as one descends from the house. Entry to our Explorer Residence transverses the main axis so that while the main spaces run broadly to the view, circulation is more dynamic. Vantage points to the view are restrained to create moments peeking through the tree canopy, while the panorama is reserved for the moment one enters the expansive open deck adjacent to the main spaces. The asymmetric arrangement of the kitchen at one end of the main axis softens the formality to allow for a more inviting sub-space within the larger open plan. By locating various elements of interest such as corner windows in the main spaces diagonally across from the entry foyer, the home draws one in while simultaneously extending its reach beyond. The existing structure was a modest cottage built in 1920 on a corner lot. It consisted of a traditional hip roof structure with exposed rafter tails and sash windows. The interior was a simple four square cabinet layout and a subsequent addition to the rear of the cottage included bathrooms and a kitchen. One of the most prominent features of the historic home was the front porch facing Newton which had a number of intact historical details. Our design approach was to preserve the form of the original structure which included shoring up exterior walls, roof and foundation structure. The front porch was meticulously documented and reproduced to scale with an integrated screen that was recessed into the center line of the millwork. On the interior, what had been the original cottage was repurposed as the principal suite, library and laundry with the existing front porch serving as an outdoor sitting area off the principal. The pedestrian entry to the house was relocated between the existing home and the two story addition to the East and assumed the same spare vernacular language of both the existing porches and roof eaves. The addition houses the kitchen and living spaces downstairs and secondary bedrooms upstairs. Our design approach centered around opening up the views of the lake while creating prominent locations for their eclectic and beautiful art collection. We relocated the kitchen, re-centered the dining on the lake and opened up the punched windows to allow for more encompassing views. As entertainers, a butler’s kitchen was added to facilitate gatherings and keep cooking equipment out and accessible while away from view. As many people do now, our clients also work from home and needed to have offices that enjoyed the views while maintaining discrete locations to privately conduct work when needed but not be on display while enjoying their home. As extensive travelers they wanted updated and unique finishes that complimented their modern style. The kitchen boasts zebra wood custom cabinets and steel backsplashes while walnut and Texas limestone accents are thread through other spaces in the home.
